Mycelium Wallet Recovery: Quick answers
If you are searching for "Mycelium Wallet Recovery" you are likely trying to understand what options remain if your 12-word seed phrase is missing or incomplete, your Mycelium backup PDF password has been forgotten, your Mycelium interface PIN is forgotten, your wallet is restoring an empty balance or your device is no longer accessible. This section answers the most important questions upfront so you can quickly assess your situation and understand what you can do to regain access to your BTC.
I have my 12 words but my wallet is showing a zero balance - are my BTC lost?
In most cases no. A zero balance after a correct seed phrase restore is almost always caused by a derivation path mismatch rather than an actual loss of funds. Mycelium uses the BIP44 derivation path m/44'/0'/0' for Bitcoin. If you restore your Mycelium seed phrase via Electrum, Ledger or Trezor, these wallets will default to a different path and the correct addresses will not be generated resulting in your balance being displayed as zero. Other possible causes include an incomplete blockchain sync, funds held in a higher account index or the seed phrase belonging to a wallet that was never funded.
I have the Mycelium backup PDF but forgot my password — can it be recovered?
It depends on how much information about the password is still available. The Mycelium backup PDF password is exactly 15 characters long and consists of uppercase letters A through Z only. The 16th character shown in the green box serves as a checksum character and is not part of the encryption password itself. If the password is completely lost or has never been recorded on the PDF, a recovery is technically infeasible. If however some or most characters are still available a recovery may still be possible. Generally speaking, the more information still available about the password the higher the chances of a successful recovery.
I am missing one or more words from my Mycelium seed phrase — is recovery still possible?
It depends on how many words are missing and whether any additional information about the wallet is available. The Mycelium wallet uses a standard 12-word seed phrase and recovery from a partial phrase is possible in some cases, but the fewer words that are available the harder and less certain the process becomes. Four or more missing words makes recovery significantly more complex and the chances of success decrease considerably with each additional missing word. Having a Bitcoin address associated with the original wallet available alongside the partial phrase also improves the chances for successful recovery.
I never backed up my wallet and my phone is no longer working — are my coins gone forever?
Not necessarily, but this is one of the most technically challenging recovery scenarios and the chances of success depend heavily on the physical state of the device. Mycelium wallet’s private keys are stored in a SQLite database at /data/data/com.mycelium.wallet/databases/ for Android devices. Accessing this data without a functional device however requires specialised hardware and forensic expertise. If you find yourself in this situation the most important thing is to avoid any further attempts to power on or repair the device before seeking a professional assessment as these actions can further reduce the already limited chances.
Recovery do's and don'ts
What not to do
These actions commonly reduce the chances of recovering your Mycelium wallet.
- Don't enter your seed phrase or PDF backup password into any website, app or tool that is not the official Mycelium app.
- Don't attempt to restore your seed phrase into another wallet without first confirming the correct BIP44 derivation path m/44'/0'/0’ for your BTC. Using the wrong path will always generate an empty wallet.
- Don't continue using or writing to the Android device if the wallet data needs to be extracted from it — additional data risk overwriting recoverable data.
What we typically need
The following data and background information will improve the quality of an initial assessment (and save you time).
- Backup type: whether you have a 12-word BIP39 seed phrase, a Mycelium backup PDF or no backup at all — these are fundamentally different recovery paths.
- Seed phrase status: if a seed phrase is available, how many words are known, in what order and whether any words are uncertain or potentially misspelled.
- PDF backup status: if a PDF backup is available, whether it is readable and how many characters of the 15-character password are still known.
- Event description: a clear summary of what happened — whether the seed was lost, the PDF password is partially forgotten, the phone is no longer functional or the balance is showing as zero after a restore.
ReWallet’s Mycelium Wallet Recovery Service
1
Lost or Incomplete Mycelium Seed Phrase
The 12-word seed phrase is crucial for Mycelium wallet recovery, but there are ways to restore this wallet with partial information. If some details on your Mycelium seed are missing, ReWallet might be able to help you reconstruct the full seed phrase and access your wallet again.
2
Lost or Partial Password for Mycelium Backup PDF
Early Mycelium wallets used an encrypted PDF backup format called Mycelium Backup 1.0 or 1.1. If the password is fully or partially forgotten, recovery feasibility depends on how many characters are still available. ReWallet has developed tools to work with the MRD Export v1 format used by Mycelium's backup PDF.
3
Lost Mycelium PIN
Without the PIN, you can't get into your Mycelium wallet. However, there are still techniques and tools ReWallet can use to get access to your Mycelium wallet and restore your BTC for you.
4
Zero Balance After Seed Phrase Restore
If your Mycelium wallet is showing an empty balance after what appears to be a successful seed phrase restore the funds are not necessarily lost. ReWallet can verify the correct addresses on-chain and identify whether the issue is a path configuration problem or something else entirely.
5
Missing Recovery PDF Information
If you have an early version of the Mycelium wallet, your backup was generated as a PDF rather than the 12-word seed phrase. If you're having issues locating or using your PDF backup, contact ReWallet for help with the Mycelium recovery process.
