BitGo Wallet Recovery: Quick Answers

If you're looking for “BitGo wallet recovery” you probably tried everything: the official Wallet Recovery Wizard, re-entering your keys, digging through old drives and emails for your KeyCard or password and you still cannot reach your coins. The hard truth is that the Wizard, the free tool BitGo built for exactly this, no longer works properly, so for most people a do-it-yourself recovery is no longer realistic. Whether your wallet password is gone, the Wizard keeps failing, your KeyCard is lost or damaged, your 2FA is unavailable or the provider you signed up through has shut down, this section helps you see what steps you can take.

Is BitGo discontinued, and can I still recover my wallet?

BitGo itself has not been discontinued, but its personal, self-serve wallet for individuals has, and the official Wallet Recovery Wizard that once let people get their funds out does not work for most users attempting BitGo DIY recovery. That does not mean your coins are gone. Funds can still be recovered from personal BitGo wallets. A personal wallet is a 2-of-3 multi-signature wallet, so your assets still exist on the Blockchain even when you can no longer log in.

Can you recover my BitGo wallet?

We cannot promise it, but we recover BitGo wallets regularly, including cases the owner had already written off. Based on what you still have, whether that is your full KeyCard, part of it or a memory of your password, you first get a free assessment for the chances for a successful recovery before committing to anything. In addition, in case we are unsuccessful, you will not have to pay us anything, as we solely work on a success-based fee.

The Wallet Recovery Wizard did not work for me. Can you still get my funds out?

Usually, yes. The Wizard failing is one of the most common reasons users reach out to us. To calm your mind first: Your coins are most likely still on the Blockchain and your keys are also probably valid. If you want to understand how your backup works first, see our BitGo KeyCard guide, but most of the time, the Recovery Wizard itself is the problem and not your keycard backup.

Therefore, we run the BitGo recovery on our own optimized, air-gapped setup with our own recovery tools developed in-house and can often complete what the Recovery Wizard could not.

What does it cost to recover my BitGo wallet and what if it fails?

We work on a success-based model, so you only pay if we actually recover access to your wallet. Our initial assessment is always free for you and we do not charge any upfront costs or fee in case of an unsuccessful recovery.

Recovery do's and don'ts

What not to do

These actions commonly reduce the chances of recovering your BitGo wallet or put your funds at risk.

  • Don't modify or delete your BitGo KeyCard PDF, old emails or the device or computer you originally set your wallet up on, even if they look useless, they can contain valuable information.
  • Don't sweep your BitGo funds to an address you don't control or any third party.
  • Don't enter your wallet password, KeyCard contents or keys into any online recovery tool, wallet checker or website. The only legitimate self-recovery tool is BitGo's open-source Wallet Recovery Wizard.
  • Don't use any untrusted PDF recovery software in case your KeyCard is corrupted or won't display correctly.

What we typically need

The following information will improve the quality of an initial assessment (and save you time).

  • Event description: a clear summary of what the issue is, whether your wallet password has been forgotten, your KeyCard is damaged or missing, the Wallet Recovery Wizard is failing or a recovery transaction is not working.
  • KeyCard status: whether your BitGo KeyCard (the PDF created with the wallet) is still available and complete.
  • Key availability: whether the User Key, Backup Key and BitGo public key from the KeyCard are all present and readable.
  • Timeline: roughly when the wallet was created, last actively used and when you lost access.

ReWallet's BitGo Wallet Recovery Service

1
Forgotten BitGo wallet password

Losing the password that decrypts your KeyCard does not mean your funds are gone. Working from whatever you still remember, we can perform password recovery on optimized, air-gapped hardware to decrypt the keys stored on your KeyCard for you.

2
Lost or partial KeyCard

Because BitGo doesn't use a standard BIP39 seed phrase or wallet file, the PDF KeyCard is your only backup. If yours is incomplete or all you have is a printout, a screenshot or an old copy, we assess whether the remaining pieces are enough to rebuild access and help you regain access.

3
The official Recovery Wizard fails

BitGo's Wallet Recovery Wizard is still available, but for most users it no longer works correctly, failing before it can recover any funds. However, your coins remain on the Blockchain, so the tool is usually the blocker rather than your backup. Where the Wizard falls short or you are unsure what steps to take, we review your case and if a recovery looks realistic, attempt it on our own air-gapped systems for you.

FAQs on BitGo Wallet Recovery

We handle personal BitGo wallets across the coins they commonly hold, such as Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin, as well as wallets that were originally set up through a third-party service such as Bitwala, Nuri, The Bitcoin Pension Fund (Jörg Molt) or any other service. If you are unsure what type you had, feel free to reach out to us and we will help you assess the next steps.
It depends on the case. A straightforward sweep from a complete KeyCard can be quick, while reconstructing a forgotten password usually takes longer, depending on the availability and accuracy of password information. After your free assessment we can give you a more realistic estimate, but we cannot guarantee any timeframes nor a successful recovery.
Often, yes. Even if the platform or service (Bitwala, Nuri, The Bitcoin Pension Fund, etc.) you signed up through is gone, the underlying assets still exist on the Blockchain. If you have your KeyCard or any part of its key material, we can assess whether the funds are recoverable.
No and it helps to know that BitGo does not perform recoveries for its personal wallet users either. The company no longer supports personal wallets and its support team will not carry out a recovery on your behalf. The BitGo personal wallet is a 2-of-3 multi-signature wallet and the recovery can only be performed from your KeyCard. In addition, as a non-custodial wallet, BitGo cannot reset your password in case you forgot it.
